This region is truly fantastic walking country with many signposted walking trails in all directions for all levels, some gentle strolls through farmland with fields of vines and sunflowers, others more strenuous hilly/mountain trails. At the house are details of over 25 walks in the locality, from 2 hour strolls to 6-8 hour treks. One such walk is from the house to Greffeil, a tiny village in a remote river valley. Starting from Domaine de Rey, the walk takes you through the vines with views of the Pyrenees to the beautiful village of Ladern. From here a rough track takes you up through a forest to a high, wild flower meadow, until you reach a plateau with stunning views of the rocky and thickly wooded countryside. Descending to Greffeil, you pass though orchards of fig & plum trees and arrive at an ancient stone bridge and river, where there are deep rock pools for a refreshing swim. This takes about three and a half hours and has been done with three unfit adults and children ranging from 12 to 4. Photographs of the walk are in the gallery page.
For the fitter and more adventurous there are plenty of more challenging walks, some of which take in the Cathar castles. The Cathars were a dissident sect of medieval Christians who were brutally suppressed in the thirteenth century. They often took refuge in hilltop fortresses, some clinging precipitously to sheer rocks, the most renowned of which is Montsegur, an hours drive from the house. The Montsegur mountain walk is a seven hour hike ascending to the Pic de St-Barthelmey (2348m), and passes by two very beautiful, wild mountain lakes. This walk amongst others, is detailed in Alan Mattingly’s excellent guide, Walks in the Cathar Region. Further information on all walks, maps and recommended books can be emailed on request.
